How many people fit around a dining table?
The rule: 60 cm of edge per person. So a 180 cm table seats three comfortably on each side, and a 120 cm table seats two. Add the ends if the table is 90 cm wide or more.
More important than the table itself: leave 90 to 100 cm between the table edge and the nearest wall or furniture. Less than that and nobody can pull a chair out and stand up.
Marble on a dining table — the whole truth
A dining table meets what a coffee table does not: lemon juice, tomato sauce, wine, vinegar. All acids, and all of them etch marble if left. Anyone who wants marble in a dining room should know this before buying rather than after.
What makes it work in practice:
- A sealer renewed every 6 months rather than every 12
- Busy figuring (Breccia, green) to hide what does happen
- A honed finish rather than polished — etching shows far less on it
- Mats under hot dishes and sauces
Desks
A marble desktop is a different proposition entirely: cool to the touch, dead steady under a pen, and untroubled by a warm laptop. Crucially, it never meets acids at all, so the dining room's main problem simply is not there. This is why marble works better on a home desk than it does in a dining room.
A comfortable desk is 120–140 cm long, 60–70 cm deep, and 74–76 cm high.
Thickness and base
Our dining tops start at 2 cm. Thicker looks richer but adds serious weight — a 180 × 90 cm top at 3 cm passes 120 kg. That makes the base a structural decision, not a decorative one: a single central pedestal gives more legroom, while four legs give more stability on long tops.
