Choosing a marble coffee table you will not regret
The coffee table is the piece you look at every day, and the one people most often get the wrong size. The working rule: make it between half and two thirds the length of the sofa in front of it, and leave 40–45 cm between the table edge and the sofa so someone can pass without twisting a knee. Height is measured from the seat cushion — level with it, or 2–4 cm below, reads as balanced and comfortable.
Round or rectangular?
Rectangular suits long sofas and long rooms, and gives more usable surface per centimetre. Round wins in three cases: narrow rooms with a lot of foot traffic, homes with small children — no sharp corners — and spaces with an L-shaped sofa, where a rectangle looks wedged in.
What the colours actually mean in use
Black marble with white and gold veining hides daily marks better than anything else, but shows fingerprints and dust clearly. White is the opposite: it looks clean, but any coloured spill shows. Green and Breccia sit in between — their busy figuring swallows small marks. If the table will take daily coffee and children, busy figuring is your friend.
Does marble really stain?
Yes. Marble is porous and reacts with acids — lemon, vinegar and coffee in particular. That is manageable rather than disqualifying: a sealer renewed every 6 to 12 months, plus wiping spills when they happen rather than later, keeps a table unmarked for years. Avoid acidic cleaners and abrasive powders entirely.
